Steps I Took to Create My Podcast Course

When I first decided to help people launch their podcasts, I was determined to create a course that was not just comprehensive but also straightforward. To ensure this, I took four clients through the six-week process before finalizing the course. Their feedback, recommendations, and suggestions helped shape the course into what it is today.

The coaching process was not just about delivering information, but about understanding each client’s unique podcasting journey. The 1:1 coaching allowed me to tailor my suggestions and feedback to their specific needs, making the process personal and rewarding for both parties.

From the initial idea to the actual launch, the process of creating this course took about six to seven months, and I did everything myself. Every aspect was carefully planned and executed, ensuring that the course is not just a resource but a valuable tool for anyone looking to launch their podcast.

Here are the steps I took to create my podcast course.

Write down the Steps Needed to Launch a Podcast, Then Broke It up Into a Six Week’s Timeline

When I first launched my podcast, I Googled how to launch a podcast and researched everything that a podcast needed. From there, I worked on one thing at a time because I was overwhelmed by all the information I found on Google. It took me over a month from the time I started researching to the launch of my first episode.

After launching my podcast, before I even thought about helping others launch theirs, I completed a podcast course with a six-week launch timeline. So, when I was brainstorming how to put everything together, the six-week timeline was the sweet spot. It wasn’t rushed, and it wasn’t too long that it would feel like we were dragging the process too much.

I sat down, wrote down everything I did to launch my podcast, wrote down everything needed to launch a podcast, and broke it down into a six-week timeline. This timeline is designed to provide a structured and manageable pace for learning and implementation. Each client will work on two to three things at a time per week—not too much that it’s overwhelming, but just enough that they’ll make progress every week.

Of course, anyone can launch a podcast before the six-week timeline; however, I don’t suggest that because I feel that organization and having systems in place will enhance your chance of success in podcasting, whatever success for your podcast means to you.

Created a Slide Deck in Canva for Each Week

I created a slide deck in Canva for each week from the six-week timeline. Each week, there are two to three tasks to work on, so each slide deck explains those tasks in detail and provides examples if needed.

This part took me the longest to complete because there are six weeks of slide decks, each with about ten slides, for about sixty slides. Because this task was so much, I broke it down to completing each deck a week before meeting with the first client I went through the program with. Each deck took me about an hour or so to complete. Before I met with my first client, I practiced going through them with my family.

With 1:1 coaching, it usually takes around an hour to go through all the slides, depending on how many questions the client has throughout, but while recording each module (more on this later), it ended up being around 10 minutes each.

Record Each Module

The next step was to record myself going through each slide deck. There are six modules, one for each week, and I actually recorded it all in one day! Each module is about 10 to 12 minutes long. Then, I recorded the welcome to the course video, the congratulations video after completion, and editing videos. As a bonus for clients, I interviewed three podcasters to share their podcasting journey and tips. This brings us to twelve videos in total for the course.

The plan wasn’t to record each video in one day, but I was in the zone, so I wanted to finish them all since I had already started. I intentionally blocked off a whole day on my calendar to record the modules. My family knew what I was doing, so they did their own thing, and of course, I took breaks between them.

Edit Each Video

All videos were reviewed and edited on a different day because I didn’t want to overwhelm myself. Then, I scheduled the interviews with the podcasters, and right after recording, I edited them. That took place within two to three months because of scheduling differences and availabilities. So, if you want to include other experts in your courses, keep that in mind and schedule ahead of time.

Open My Stan Store

Initially, I was going to have my course on my own website when I was hosting it myself. However, I found out that I had set up my website incorrectly to do this, which meant that I needed a website makeover. This became a whole other project, so I started researching where else I could host my course. It was going to be Udemy, but then I found Stan Store. (If you use my referral link to sign up for Stan Store, I’ll receive a 20% commission; thank you in advance).

Stan Store makes it super simple to create your course on their platform. You don’t have to do any coding; it’s straight to the point. All I had to do was upload the videos for each module, type the description for each week, and upload the added bonuses like a podcast starter kit with essential tools and resources, an eBook with in-depth podcasting tips, and interview videos with successful podcasters sharing their journey and tips. Once I added my price, I was ready to publish the course.

One of the things I liked best about having my course on Stan Store is that I could upload the videos directly to the platform; I didn’t have to upload to YouTube or Vimeo and then add a link like I’ve seen other platforms do. Stan Store makes it really easy, and their customer service is top-notch!
