Have you ever thought about becoming a public speaker? Maybe you’ve attended a conference or tuned into a virtual summit and thought, “I’d love to be the one up there teaching and inspiring others.”
If that’s ever crossed your mind — and you already have a podcast — you’re closer to being a public speaker than you think!
Your podcast is your stage. Every time you turn on the mic, share your story, and teach something new, you’re already practicing the art of public speaking.
From Podcast Host to Public Speaking
When I started my podcast, The American Dream in the Eyes of Immigrants, my main goal was to advocate for immigration. And share the stories of immigrants chasing their dreams in the U.S. I didn’t think much about public speaking at the time.
But as the years went by, something shifted. The more I learned about podcasting, the more I shared with others. Then people started inviting me to speak about both podcasting and immigration.
Now, three years later, I’ve been hired for speaking engagements in both areas. And public speaking has become one of my favorite parts of what I do.
The Unexpected Path to the Stage
In my first year of podcasting, I volunteered to co-lead a monthly virtual networking event for podcasters. Shortly after that, when I began coaching others on how to start their own shows, I hosted monthly webinars to help new podcasters launch confidently.
Those early experiences opened new doors. They led to my first virtual summit speaking opportunity with Latinas in Podcasting. And since then, I’ve spoken at six virtual events and two in-person engagements this year alone.
Your Podcast Is Your Public Speaking Portfolio
If public speaking is something you’d like to pursue, consider starting a podcast. And if you already have one, use it to showcase your voice and expertise!
Your podcast demonstrates that you can connect with an audience, teach from experience, and communicate with clarity — all essential skills for a great speaker.
When I pitch myself to speak at conferences or events, my podcast naturally positions me as an expert. Whether the topic is immigration or podcasting, my consistent content and experience speak for themselves.
Owning My Expertise
Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with the Orlando Chapter of the (&) Campaign about my border trip experience. During that talk, the chapter leader reminded me not to downplay my knowledge — because to the average person, I am the expert.
That conversation stuck with me. It reminded me that you don’t need a formal title to share your knowledge confidently. Of course, I always clarify that I’m not an attorney and can’t offer legal advice, but I can share real experiences and general insights about immigration that help others understand the topic better.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been drawn to podcasting, know that it can open more doors than you might expect — including the opportunity to become a public speaker.
And if you’re already a podcaster, don’t hesitate to pitch yourself for speaking engagements. Your voice, experience, and perspective have value.
If you ever need a speaker for your next virtual or in-person event, I’d love to connect — you can book me here.
