What does the American Dream really mean? For many, it’s about achieving financial stability and success. But for immigrants, this dream often carries a deeper weight, fueled by the sacrifices of their families. In this post, I explore this deeper with Latina Entrepreneur Jannese Torres, the host and founder of Yo Quiero Dinero Podcast and author of Financially Lit!

Jannese shares her inspiring journey, growing up with Puerto Rican parents in New Jersey, and how she broke barriers to build wealth and empower other Latinas.

From Puerto Rican Roots to New Jersey Life

Jannese’s story starts with her parents’ move from Puerto Rico to the United States. They sought better opportunities for their daughters. While Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens by birth, Jannese points out the cultural shock her parents experienced was akin to the immigrant experience. Language barriers and cultural differences created initial hurdles.

Her father, a U.S. Military veteran, initially moved to Virginia before settling in New Jersey. He wanted to give Jannese and her sister access to better education and career paths. Growing up as the eldest daughter, Jannese felt a strong sense of responsibility to make their sacrifices worthwhile.

Fueled by her parents’ hard work and determination, Jannese excelled academically. She became the first in her family to attend college and earn a master’s degree. She then embarked on a successful corporate career. Witnessing her parents overcome racism and language barriers motivated her to forge a different path.

Navigating Identity and Education

Growing up in a majority-minority city in New Jersey shaped Jannese’s early experiences. Her school was ethnically diverse, primarily Latino and Black. However, the disparity in education became clear when she attended college. She noticed peers from affluent, majority-white districts had a stronger academic foundation. Despite these challenges, Jannese’s connection to her heritage remained strong through regular visits to Puerto Rico.

Visits to Puerto Rico were frequent and immersive. Jannese explains that her parents ensured the family stayed connected to their roots. Salsa music filled their home. They hosted family parties. Puerto Rican culture was integral to their lives. These early experiences created a strong foundation.

As an adult, Jannese gained a deeper appreciation for Puerto Rican culture beyond family visits. She started exploring the island as a traveler, and learning more about the culture and history. This exploration enriched her understanding of what it means to be Puerto Rican. It also deepened her commitment to uplifting her community.

From Corporate Grind to Latina Entrepreneur

Jannese initially chased the traditional path to success. This path meant securing a high-paying job. However, she soon realized corporate life wasn’t fulfilling her. Despite earning a six-figure salary by age 30, Jannese felt disconnected from her work. She wasn’t working towards her own dreams.

Inspired by the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) movement, Jannese explored alternative paths. She discovered how others were using entrepreneurship to achieve financial freedom. This realization sparked a new direction. She began to see content creation as more than just a hobby.

Diving into the world of online business, Jannese learned how to monetize her passions. This move was separate from her formal education and corporate career. It also opened up a world of possibilities. It allowed her to build something of her own.

Redefining the American Dream as a Latina Entrepreneur

Jannese believes the American Dream needs a new definition. The traditional version of getting a job, buying a house, and having kids no longer resonates with many people. She emphasizes the importance of thriving, not just surviving.

For Jannese, the American Dream now means becoming the most fully expressed version of herself. She honors her ancestors’ sacrifices and the opportunities they created for her. It’s her duty to live a life of purpose, passion, and financial freedom.

Her parents’ version of the American Dream was rooted in fear and a desire for stability. Jannese feels a responsibility to use the opportunities she has been given to create a life that is both fulfilling and impactful.
