Today’s guest is Soraya Senosier, the host of the Diaspora in Development Podcast. She shares her journey as a Haitian-Canadian growing up in Canada and the cultural impact of the U.S. We talked about societal differences between Canada and the U.S., although as neighboring countries, there are many similarities but more differences. For example, Canada’s cultural mosaic versus the American melting pot highlights the preservation of individual cultural identities, making culture a central theme in their experiences.

We also discuss recent negative sentiments toward the Haitian community and reflections on racism and colorism within Caribbean cultures. Lastly, Soraya’s initiative to launch the “Diaspora and Development” podcast addresses the complexities of international development for people of color. It highlights achievements and ongoing challenges like burnout and racism while emphasizing gratitude for the struggles that have enabled a life without fear or persecution in the U.S.

Culture Reflections

Soraya shares the differences she encountered between Canada and the U.S., especially regarding cultural influence and societal attitudes. In Canada, the cultural mosaic approach allows for the preservation of individual cultural identities, compared to America’s melting pot, which often pressures assimilation.

Her experiences highlight the harsh realities of racism in the U.S. This is a challenge many immigrants face alongside other societal issues like bullying and violence.

Navigating Identity and Integration

Soraya’s experience is not just about cultural contrasts; it’s a story of adaptation and resilience—her journey from Ottawa to the U.S. shares the immigrant experience of balancing multiple identities. Although Canada is our neighboring country, there are still vast differences.

Soraya and I discuss the various approaches immigrant families take toward cultural integration in the U.S. By highlighting the diversity of experiences within the immigrant community. Soraya’s multicultural upbringing enriches this discussion. Because she sheds light on how culture identity can be both a source of strength and a site of tension.

Economic Perspectives and Culture Perceptions

Another layer of Soraya’s experience involves the economic and cultural differences she observed between Canada and the U.S., from the rising cost of services in America to varying perceptions of value and friendliness.
