Today’s story is from Diana Rubi. Diana is a creator born in Mexico but raised here in the US. She shares her story of her family’s decision to come to the US and how her dad’s employer sponsored him and the family for residency. Lastly, we talk about her creative endeavors.
From Mexico to the Midwest for Diana Rubi
Diana’s immigration story began when her family left Mexico for the United States in search of better opportunities and safety. Her father, previously a police officer, sought to escape the corruption within the police system, leading them first to Nevada and eventually to Peoria, Illinois.
Growing up in a predominantly Black community, Diana found a welcoming and inclusive environment but faced challenges related to her undocumented status. She vividly recalls her mother’s words, “Learn everything you can because they can take anything from us except what’s in your mind.” These words shaped her drive to succeed despite constantly fearing deportation.
Navigating Life as an Undocumented Student
Diana described the isolation of being undocumented during a time when the topic was not openly discussed. Before DACA came into play in 2012, being undocumented was not something that was talked about. Without resources for immigrants in her community, her family leaned heavily on each other and became a source of support for others.
Diana’s family eventually gained legal residency through her father’s employer’s petition, an opportunity not available to all. Her firsthand experience highlighted the complexities of the immigration process, inspiring her to pursue a career in immigrant rights advocacy.
From Advocacy to Creativity
Diana worked tirelessly in the immigration field, from policy work to paralegal roles, but the emotional toll of the job caught up with her during the pandemic. The pause gave her time to reflect, leading her to pivot her career and embrace her creative passions.
In 2021, Diana relocated to Northwest Arkansas, seeking a fresh start after her parents reloaded first. She began supporting Latina entrepreneurs and small business owners while exploring her creativity through design. Her work has flourished, and she recently won a public transit design competition, marking a significant milestone in her creative journey.
Building Community and Inspiring Others
Today, Diana continues to champion small businesses and Latina entrepreneurs through initiatives like her launched venture, Amigas Collective. Her work bridges the gap between community development and creative expression, proving that transitions in life can lead to unexpected and fulfilling paths.
