On the 56th episode of The American Dream in The Eyes of Immigrants Podcast, I had the honor of interviewing my dear friend Stacey. Stacey’s journey began in Jamaica, where she was born, and continued to New York City when she was just five years old. Despite the distance, she was fortunate to visit Jamaica every summer, a tradition that kept her connected to her roots and allowed her to learn the art of cooking from her grandmother. This deep love for cooking and her Jamaican heritage led her to establish Batch Pantry.

Meet Stacey

Stacey’s grandparents played a pivotal role in her life, instilling in her the values, standards, and culture that she holds dear. The privilege of spending summers in Jamaica, surrounded by her grandparents, was a blessing that not everyone gets to experience. This unique upbringing has shaped Stacey into the woman she is today, and it’s a testament to the power of family and heritage.

I asked Stacey if she remembered how she was feeling about moving to the US – but she says she doesn’t remember her exact feelings, but she remember the moving process. She remembers being on a flight with her grandmother and the transition of moving to New York. It was going from tropical weather to snow because they moved in the winter. What a shock! She also remembers that they were coloring when she started school in kindergarten, and she already knew multiplication.

How Batch Pantry Started

Stacey shares that Batch Pantry is a gourmet food company with sauces, infused olive oils, and seasonings. And this started because it was a creative way for Stacey to escape what was happening in her life. She loves cooking for others, which she learned along the way and decided to make a business out of.

She says she loves being creative, creating sauce recipes, and seeing what works and what doesn’t. Since the pandemic, her business has changed. It used to be catering, but now it’s selling sauces, oils, and seasonings.

Although Stacey has a 9 to 5 career, she loves the business aspect of things. And loves being creative, so launching Batch Pantry made sense. Everything was a lot of trial and error and seeing what worked, but that’s business in general. Stacey said she loved pushing herself to put the products together and seeing their outcomes. She’s enjoying this experience.
